My Journey
After a horrendous and abusive childhood, Gil struggled to understand who he was and what direction in life to take as a young man. He considered his life to have little meaning until he found solace in faith. Soon after he reached for goals he once thought was impossible.
He bought several rough acres in Northwest Tennessee and pulled in a 1959 mobile home to temporarily live in. He spent two years rebuilding and expanding the 1938 “shack” on the property as well as building barns, chicken coops, and fences. He began his husbandry with two ewe sheep and expanded quickly. Laying hens also became a large part of the farm. He planted orchards of fig trees, apples and peaches as well.
During this time, Gil had begun singing and playing guitar and bass in church and singing/playing with a family gospel group.
After marrying, the farm was sold with the money invested in larger farm property. The new farm had no fences nor barns, but a modern house, Gil renovated. Within 9 months, he built several barns, chicken coops, a workshop and utility buildings. 20 miles of fence line was also built to handle the numerous Nubian goats, sheep, horses, and donkeys. The farm soon became a teaching farm for those in the area who wanted to learn about goats and their needs. All of this while also working for the U.S. Navy as an I.T. contractor .
Gil soon started playing an upright bass for several country/gospel groups. He also had the privilege to play bass at the Frog Jump Opry, where many of the local farmers and workers would gather each week to sing and play their favorite songs. Gil’s song writing soon began, but on a very elementary level.
Unfortunately, as so many do, the marriage fell apart and Gil moved to Nashville. He joined a Barbershop chorus to hone his singing skills. There he met his singing partner, Bob Cole. The two also organized and sang in the GTO quartet. The popularity of the quartet was overwhelming until the pandemic hit and Nashville shutdown. Soon Gil and Bob contemplated moving to Florida.
Starting over again from scratch in Florida and with a few missteps, the two created the BnB Duet (bnbduet.com). Instead of playing instruments, the two use background music with their harmony voices. They are now booked year round and have performed several times out of the country.
Gil soon felt the urge to put more emphasis on his song writing and has produced many interesting songs in several genres, reflecting a heritage all their own. He also completed his autobiography of his younger years and is available on Amazon. Book title: Life Deception
